Almost all Kukes District local administration units lack of urban waste
management systems. Most of them don’t have even containers for
collecting the waste materials, which are then thrown on mountains and
national or rural roads.
The Kukes-Bicaj road, one of the most important investments in Kukes, have turned into a problem not only for the Bicaj Commune residents, but also for the passerby drivers, since this road is extremely polluted and there are no containers.
No measure has been taken for a long time to improve the situation in this road where dozens of vehicles are obliged to face each day the dumped waste materials. The most concerning fact is that many epidemic diseases could put in danger the lives of the local residents and their children.
Another problem with the Kukes-Bicaj road is the frequent landslide, although the damage so far have not been considerable. Most of the Kukes rural areas don’t have any cleaning service at all. The town of Kukes has a full efficient service, but the waste management structure is very outdated, especially as regards bins and containers.
The community and private businesses are the main culprits for this situation, who prefer to get rid of their waste wherever they can, without thinking about the consequences. The local authorities have asked an urgent intervention for improving the situation, or the mountainous tourism will be in danger.
