The Head of the European Parliament delegation, Eduard Kukan, declared
for Top Channel that the strike of the former political prisoners is a
very tragic situation.
“It is very painful when people undertake such painful actions”, Kukan declared, adding that the government will resolve the situation of their financial compensation.
Speaking on the three matters that Albania must fulfil until December, Kukan declared that he expects more results. Kukan gave an interview to our journalist in Brussels, Arta Tozaj.
Top Channel: Mr. Kukan, you have repeatedly asked to give more results to Albania. What about now? Will you still continue after this conditioned proposition by the Commission?
Kukan: I will be very boring but also very consistent. I will ask for more results. After this progress-report I think that it is quite clear for the Albanian politicians that what kind of results is expected from them in three fields: High Court, Public Administration and the Laws Adopted in Parliament. For this we need concrete results, fulfilment of these issues. Not critical mass or anything like that, but fulfilment. I take very seriously the words of Commissioner Fule, who said that as soon as these concrete results are on the table, the Commission will be ready to inform members of the state and the Council about this. So yes, we need the results.
Top Channel: For the last three weeks, the political prisoners of the communist regime have been holding a hunger strike for their legal rights, and two of them were burned while attempting self sacrifice. Are following this situation?
Kukan: I am following this situation very closely, because it is a very tragic situation, and those people are so much frustrated that they take this kind of protest. It is really very serious and very painful. However, I understand they are asking compensation for the sufferings they have endured in the prison of the communist regime. I hope that the government will attend to it and will try to resolve this situation, because when human beings are visibly suffering, it is clearly necessary to take that situation with all seriousness.
Top Channel: Will this situation be reflected at the European Parliament Resolution for Albania, which will be discussed during the next weeks at the Foreign Committee?
Kukan: The first discussion of the draft-resolution will be held next week, next Thursday, at the Foreign Committee. And of course I am sure that all the developments or all the events that will happen in Albania between now and December, when the primary session is going to adopt, will be reflected in the report. Of course depending on what kind of resolutions of these programs it is going to be.
