Eduard Kukan and Hanes Swoboda declare that the recent political
agreements between the Albanian political parties are a much expected
move that will bring the normalization of the political climate.

The representatives of the two major European Parliament Groups have sent an open letter to the Albanian PM Sali Berisha and the Opposition leader, Edi Rama. In this letter they say that they welcome these developments that according to them signalize the will for moving towards a new era of cooperation, and that lay the foundations for normalizing the political life and for having the politicians addressing to the Albanian citizens’ problems.

“We see these agreements that have been confirmed by the Parliament as a political response to the great challenges of the country. This solution could not come in a better time for the country and the region. This opportunity must be exploited, fur undertaking political actions that are decisive, constructive and towards the future; for securing a clear perspective for the citizens. Albania must not lose this chance”, the letter says.

The two authors of the letter encourage Berisha and Rama to join forces for continuing the reforms under the spirit of reconciliation and pragmatism, underlining that the political actors will win credibility only by reinforcing and implementing the agreement in a concrete way.

Besides the 12 key criteria set by the European Commission, the European Parliament representatives hope that the agreements reached last week will bring a better functioning of the Parliament, and not only that.

“The wide consensus in the electoral reform will play an important role for guaranteeing the necessary functionality of the democratic process. We are also sure that now there is an opportunity window for implementing important reforms regarding the rule of law and human rights, especially the judicial reforms, in terms of fighting corruption and organized crime with efficiency, and for guaranteeing equal treatment and without discrimination for all citizens”, the letter underlines.

The head of the European Parliament Delegation for Balkan, the right winged Eduard Kukan and the vice President of the left winged Parliamentary Group, Hannes Swoboda, express their belief that Albania’s future and of the entire region is towards the EU. They also offer their readiness to help in the efforts for integration.

Both European MPs wish that the future inter-parliamentary meeting that will be held on December 9th, will mar a new phase even for the relations with the European Parliament.
