Kosovo war, the forgotten victims of sexual violence

Almost 19 years from the Kosovo war, sexual violence survivors have not been mentioned as war victim category.

The former President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, attended the “Beyond Financial Support” conference, in which she said that this is unacceptable. Jahjaga talked about the creation of a supportive program for thousands of women and men violated during the war.

“The survivors of the sexual war in Kosovo need assistance beyond the financial one. For more than 15 years after the war, they have never been mentioned as a war-victim category.  As a government and as a society, we have ignored their suffering and needs, and also the horror for each of the victims. This way we have stayed silent, isolated, and left them alone. Either we were not aware of doing this, or we did not want to be aware. Our approach should be for justice and bringing to court everyone who has committed such horrible crimes”,s aid Atifete Jahjaga, former President of Kosovo.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Ramush Haradinaj, promised the full support for this category;

“This is a very sensitive situation. The missions of Kosovo, despite the lack of knowledge and experience in these topics, have shown the readiness to help sexual violence victims to earn their rights. I want to guarantee that the country’s institutions feel their share of the burden and they know that this matter requires the commitment of everyone. We guarantee you that we will implement everything that is part of our nature as executive and legislative”, said Haradinaj, Prime Minister of Kosovo.

The Kosovo authorities have accepted more than 180 applications for recognizing the status of people violated during the war.
