The enlargement strategy published by the European Union this Tuesday confirmed that Serbia and Montenegro are closer to accession than other countries.
While Montenegro has no insurmountable obstacle, the keyword for Serbia is “normalizing relations with Kosovo”.
As always, Kosovo spurs a lot of debates in Belgrade, and this time it has involved the Serbian Minister of Defense, Alexander Vulin.
“We cannot leave this national matter in the hands of European bureaucrats”, Vulin declared, adding that “With Kosovo, Serbia needs a long-term and strong division between Albanians and Serbs”.
The Serbian Minister didn’t give details about what the division of Kosovo would involve, but usually, these ideas include having Northern Kosovo, of Serbian majority, joining Serbia.
The idea was mentioned even earlier by the Foreign Minister, Ivica Dacic, but he was careful to specify that this was his personal opinion, not from the government.
The President of Serbia, Alexandar Vucic, has underlined many times that with Kosovo they need a solution that will not be satisfying for any party, without specifying which party.
