KESH financial crisis

Andis Harasani, a Socialist MP and former General Director of the
Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) says that the Corporation is having
financial difficulties, because the government has not predicted state
budget funds for importing energy, a proposition made by the opposition
last year.

According to Harasani, importing energy in short terms, in an emergency situation, is increasing its cost. Harasani predicts that the difficult situation will continue.

“The annual consumption is predicted to be at around 7.2-7.5 billion KW hours. The production is not more than 4 billion, and at least 3.2 billion need to be bought, with a value at around 50 million EUR. The situation in the region is not favorable at all. We have a decision from the Bulgarian government to block export, with around 1000 MW that are removed from the system. This will increase the energy price”, Harasani declared.

Harasani says that the situation should not be prejudiced politically. He asked the government to invite the opposition to dialogue and find a better solution.

“I think that there is an urgent need to gather the inter-state Commission for Energy. It would be obligatory to have experts from both sides, who would discuss without political colors how this situation could be resolved”, Harasani declared.

According to Harasani, if the Albanian Power Corporation will not come out of the financial crisis, the negative effects will infect the economy too.

“There could be a chain effect that could block the payment of the companies that are constructing roads and those who have worked under state contracts. This would create a negative effect for the banks and the loans”, Harasani declared.

A few days ago, the Minister of Finances, Ridvan Bode, declared for Top Channel that the government will use the reserve funds for fulfilling the financial needs of KESH to import energy. But this would be insufficient. The worst scenario is that there will be budget cuts for investments, in order to liberate more money for KESH.
