The Albanian writer, Ismail Kadare, visited the city of Shkoder for the
inauguration of the initiative “Two Languages, One Book”, between the
Luigj Gurakuqi University of Shkoder and the University of Montenegro.

During a conversation with different scholars, as regards the situation of the Albanian language and literature, the Balkan cultural identity and Albania’s EU aspirations, Kadare declared:

“The people have what is called identity, which is composed of bad and good things. Europeanization, in the first place, must happen within us. We must reconfirm ourselves as Europeans first”, Kadare declared.

The famous writer valued the role of some well-known writers of the past, who came from the city of Shkoder, such as Pjeter Budi and Pjeter Bogdani. According to him, these important figures are not commemorated as they deserve.

Kadare expressed his surprise when reading that the laic literature in Albania was developed by poor poets, when in fact, Pjeter Budi’s poems are found in the late middle ages. Kadare confirmed that the Albanian language is one of the basic languages of Europe, but the Albanians do not know it.
