Justice Commission and Conference of Chairmen meet tomorrow for Justice Reform

22/08/2016 00:00

Members of the Special Commission for Justice Reform will meet once again
this Tuesday, on the same day when the Parliament Speaker has summoned the
Conference of Chairmen, which reviews laws before the voting procedure.

The meeting is expected to focus on the “Vetting Law” and other audit processes for judges and prosecutors, which were all mentioned by EURALIUS as red lines that cannot be crossed.

The Commission members will get updated with propositions of experts and technical remarks from EURALIUS and OPDAT.

The Albanian opposition and Euralius do not seem to be yet on the same page with four principles that are related to deadlines, institutions, role of international observers and the justice collaborators, since EURALIUS had several remarks regarding their propositions.

For the opposition, these four principles that will be given through a single law, (Vetting Law), are necessary to bring a fair and efficient reform that will turn citizens’ trust to justice.

The discussions will also include the Anti-Corruption Prosecution law, which has an article that provides punishments for media outlets, that was seen by many as a gap that might leave room for censorship.

The Conference of Chairmen will meet at 18:00 to establish the starting date of the new parliamentary session, in which the “Vetting” law might be voted.

The political parties involved might be challenged once again to show their political will for the justice reform. The “Vetting Law” is regarded as the most delicate part.
