Judges: We don’t feel protected

One day after Judge Idriz Mulkurti was threatened by defendant Dritan
Dajti, the judge has not filed a request for protection, but he has
appeared with a guard outside the court.

The Union of Judges have reacted in an interview for Top Channel, considering the case of Judge Mulkurti as a precedent which shows how unsafe are judges in Albania.

“We should not see this as an isolated case. As regards threats made to judges, we should see it as a wider problem. There are procedures for protecting judges, but by treating it as a special case. We need to resolve the problematic in general. Today’s judges need more safety and support. It is not only this threat. We have judges who have been killed, attacked, thrown acid at, etc. Certainly, our reaction to these attacks should be different”, declared Ervin Metalla.

The Press Office of the High Council of Justice reacted by saying that the High Council of Judges sees the case with concern.

The HCJ condemns every threat and considers the public pressure against judges as a direct attack against the rule of law.

“The HCJ expresses this concern to all law enforcing institutions, including the Prosecution, to take the necessary measures based on their competences”, the press release says.

The President of the Court of Serious Crimes, Sander Simoni, confirmed that ater the threats, the Police has been informed about this case.
