Jensen: President, political test for 2012

In an interview for the newest magazine that will be published for the
first time this Saturday, “Java”, the Danish Ambassador to Tirana,
Karsten Jensen, analyzed the political situation in the country, also
from the point of view of Denmark, as the country that is taking over
the next EU Presidency.

As for Albania’s role in the integration process, the Danish ambassador gave a positive note by saying that his country supports the EU enlargement not only with Albania, but also with Kosovo and the entire Balkan. Mr. Jensen underlined what he called a misinformation and political propaganda that has created a confused situation regarding some objectives, such as the indispensable challenges that Albania needs to achieve. For the Danish ambassador, the election of the President will be a key test for Albania.

“Considering the role of the Presidency in the constitutional structure of Albania, and the independence of the other institutions, including the Judicial System and the Secret Service, the Presidential elections will be a test for the Albanian democracy. It is very significant for Albania to choose a President who must be independent, strong, unstained from the past or the present, and accepted by everyone. A President that will continue to guarantee the Albanian people and the outside world that your country is firmly walking in the democratic path”, Jensen declared.

The Danish ambassador says that the EU candidate status must be the only objective that the Albanians should demand from politics.

“It is strange the fact that the Albanians elect representatives who do not have Albania and the Albanians as their main focus”, the Ambassador declared.

The Danish ambassador considered as intolerable the change of some projects that include important constructions in the Albanian capital, such as the Skenderbej Square and the new Mosque.

“By changing a project, unilaterally, on the last minute, will make world rank studios avoid engaging with Albanian projects. Changing Mona Lisa’s smile because you prefer a grimace, would make Leonardo Da Vinci and other figures of that caliber think more than twice before offering their talent”, the Ambassador says.

Another key issue mentioned by Mr. Jensen was the opposition’s boycott, which, according to him, did not affect the EU candidate status refusal, but uncovered some big problems that had been hidden for a long time. The Danish ambassador cast shadows of doubt on the justice and democracy level in Albania.

“The Gerdec catastrophe, the silence for the Wikileaks revelations, the ‘technical’ failures of those few high-profile corruption cases and the failure to conclude the January 21st investigations after one year, fueled the doubts about the justice and democracy in Albania”, the Ambassador declared.
