“From occupiers to freedom fighters” was the suggestive title of the
exhibition that was followed by a series of activities organized by the
House of Resistance at Fondotoce, the biggest in Europe.
The meeting gathered former Italian partisans from the Gramsci Battalion with Albanian veterans in a warm atmosphere. The 96-year-old Battista Cavallotto, vice Commander of the Gramsci Formation, which was created by the Italian soldiers that remained in Albania, has not forgotten the meeting when he raised the original Gramsci Brigade flag.
Like in a movie, he met through tears his friend of arms after 68 years, the Albanian veteran Ziqiri Mero, who traveled from Albania.
The black and white photos of 1943-1944 will be collected in a book. This was an important period for all those former Italian soldiers who went to Albania as occupiers and returned to their homeland with good thoughts in their heart for Albania, to the point that they haven’t forgotten it after many decades.
