The legend of Italian pop music Toto Cutugno, who became known worldwide with the 1983 song “L’Italiano”, closed his eyes forever today at the age of 80.

Cutugno, whose birth first name was Salvatore, died at Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital after suffering from a long-term illness that worsened in recent months, according to reports.

Born in Tuscany to a Sicilian father, Cutugno won the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Insieme” in 1992.

He also won the Italian Sanremo Song Festival twice.

In 2019, a group of Ukrainian musicians tried to stop Cutugno from performing in Kiev saying he was a Russian sympathizer, as they did with his veteran Italian music star cohort Al Bano.

Prime Minister Edi Rama reacted after the death of the Italian singer-songwriter Toto Cutugno with a post on social networks.

“You were a great, true Italian, we were supposed to meet this summer, but God decided otherwise, while your songs remain forever recorded in the hearts of many Albanians. Thank you for everything Toto Cutugno, it was a privilege to live contemporarily with a legend like you”, writes Rama.
