Isolated residents seeking help

The snowfalls of the recent days have blocked even more communes in the
entire country. Thousands of families have no ways of communication, and
many suffer the lack of electric power, the lack of food and health
services.

The residents in Puka and the surrounding communes are now seeking help from the air, because the roads are blocked and they cannot confront the alarming situation any more. They say that the snow thickness has reached 4 meters.

The map of the blocked areas starts in Dukagjin, Vermosh and the Shkoder district. Tropoja is also facing a difficult situation, with almost all communes isolated, where even helicopters cannot fly over, due to the bad weather.

In Kukes, the worst areas are those of Shishtavec and Has, where one person died after staying in the snow for more than 48 hours. In this area, the snow thickness goes from 1.5 to 2 meters and the temperatures have fallen under zero. The national road to Kosovo is open, but with many difficulties, since the snow is not stopping.

The area between the Diber and Elbasan districts has been isolated for weeks, and the situation is very serious in many villages. The same alarming situation is for the residents of some communes in Korce and Skrapar. In Lekas commune there is no electricity, and the residents are unable to travel with the snow that has reached 2 meters of thickness.

Residents throughout Albania are seeking for help. They have no food or any ways to transport the sick people. The medical emergencies are becoming frequent, and sick people or pregnant mothers are being transported on their relatives’ backs for many hours in the cold.
