Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future Thousands of help appeals come everyday from the areas that have been
blocked by the snow, with people saying that the snow is making house
roofs collapse.
Their main requests are for food, medicine and medical emergencies.
“We have been blocked in Topojan, Puka, Snow has reached 2 meters of thickness and it has isolated the residents”, another one says.
Another resident from Dibra made a phone call in which he expressed his concern for the blocked roads, while another one from Has says that 12-13 communes have received no aids.
“There is no help, from land or from air”, the woman from Has declared on the phone.
Another one from Golaj says that some families have emergent need for food, while another one adds that he is concerned about his family in Theth, where snow has reached four meters of thickness and many roofs have collapsed.
The areas with more appeals for help are Puka, Kukes, Dukagjin and Has. The residents have been unable to move from their homes for almost three weeks, and don’t have even electricity.
“The situation is not alarming only for the deep Puka areas. Surely, it is a disaster over there, but the situation is also difficult in the town”, says a phone caller from Puka.
Another Puka resident says that he has nothing left in his house, and that his family has an urgent need for food. A pregnant woman has been blocked in Arren village, and the relatives are seeking help through the media. Another serious situation can be seen in Gurraj and Martanesh.
In these areas there are many seperated houses that have lost all contacts. The residents have not been able to speak to their relatives, who have expressed their concerns for the old aged parents that they have left in the village homes.
“I am calling from the US, and I am concerned for my family in Vermosh. They have no electricity or open roads. Please, make everything that you can for opening the roads so that the residents can pass. Please, help the village, because they are in a very bad situation. I don’t know if my family members are dead or alive”, says another one.
Southern Albania has also blocked roads and isolated villages. The most problematic area is the Opar Highland, especially the Lekas commune and the surrounding villages, who have had no communication for three weeks.
“I am speaking from Lekas. We have been blocked here for three weeks. All reserves have been finished. We have no medicines, no food for ourselves and even for the livestock. We are unable to move”, says a phone caller from this area.
The isolated residents hope for someone to hear their appeals for help, especially for the sick residents, the elders and the poor families that do not have food reserves.
