The celebrations continue in the coastal city of Durres on the 100th
anniversary of independence. Actor Hysen Bashhysa improvised the arrival
of Ismail Qemali at the Durres Port, and the symbolic handing over of
the Albanian flag in the hands of Mayor Vangjush Doko.

The flag was passed through the main boulevard to the city centre, led by horsemen from Kosovo who imitated the path of Isa Boletini and his men to arrive in the city of National Independence.  In this ceremony was also present the OSCE Ambassador, Eugen Wollfarth, and the descendants of the Durres delegates who signed the declaration of independence.

“Those men and women who had the political awareness and the personal courage to raise the Albanian flag on November 26th in Durres divided Albania from the past and took the first step to return to our identity”, declared the Mayor of Durres.

100 years ago, on November 26th, Durres declared the independence and chose the delegates that would travel to the Vlore Meeting. A few days after this, Ismail Qemali decided to undertake the most essential act of our history in Vlore, due to the threats coming from the Serbian army. In the ceremonies held in Durres was commemorated the patriot Kasem Durresi, who secured Ismail Qemali’s travel with a group of devoted people.

The other delegates from Durres were Dom Nikolle Kacorri, Abaz Celkupa and Mustafa Aga Hanxhiu, whose signatures are today on the historic document of independence.
