Representatives of the former political prisoners who are holding a
hunger strike have negotiated for two hours with President Bujar Nishani
at the Presidency premises.
In absence of the Albanian government, the members of the international community imposed a first dialogue round.
Representatives of the US Embassy and the EU Human Rights Delegation representative, Andrea Chalupova, have used their diplomatic cars to take the strikers Fatmir Lamaj, Fatmir Lloci and Besim Volteri at the Presidency.
After the meeting with the president, in presence of the US and EU representatives, the diplomats accompanied the former political prisoners back at the hunger strike tent.
A few minutes after, Fatmir Lamaj considered the meeting with the president as an event that helped breaking the ice with the state institutions, and declared that the hunger strike will continue until the strikers’ requests will be fulfilled.
“We didn’t reach any conclusion. The President noted down our requests and left an open possibility for dialogue. We will not give up from our requests”, Lamaj declared.
The Presidential official website says that Nishani expressed his conviction that every solution must go through the financial compensation laws of the former political prisoners, as a way of social rehabilitation for this category, and not just monetary compensation.
In this context, the Head of the State will follow the process for the financial compensation law of the former political prisoners, and for this he will ask constant information from the Ministries of Finances and Justice.
