Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The eight Roma families will keep staying near the Ombudsman offices
until the central and local power structures with find a decent
solution.
Ombudsman Igli Totozani underlined that only this solution can give to these citizens the chance to live in normal conditions.
“We are negotiating; we are discussing the possible variants, alternatives that should fulfill two conditions: decency and permanence. These people cannot be moved forever. We are talking about citizens of this country, human beings. We cannot solve this issue for the moment”, Totozani declared.
The Ombudsman underlined that the Military Bases brought by the Ministry of Labor do not fulfill any living conditions for the families.
The health situation of some of the Roma family members has been difficult. Mateo, who is only eight-months-old, has been urgently sent to hospital in the early hours of this Saturday, where he received the necessary treatment. His parents say that they have no money for the medicine prescribed by the doctors. On the other hand, these families say that none of the Ministry of Labor officials have offered jobs to them.
The Unity for Human Rights Party expressed its support to the realization of the basic right, that of having a shelter.
“We addressd to the Albanian government, and request their immediate reaction in the real implementation of a national strategy for improving the social situation of the Roma community and the Balkan-Egyptian community. A strategy that should be in full cohesion with the line, the commitment and the pan-European projects for defending the rights of the Roma community”, declared Thanas Polic, vice leader of the UHRP.
