Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Institution of Statistics is challenging all official deadlines for
publishing the most important economic indicator, by openly violating the law for another time.
According to the official schedule, INSTAT should have published the economic growth for the third trimester of 2011. Top Channel asked INSTAT about causes of the delays, but there was no answer.
But the GDP is not the only indicator that INSTAT is withholding. The retail trade index for the third trimester is an important indicator that measures the sales and circulation of goods in the economy. According to the schedule, it should have been available for the public on December 2011.
Two months have passed and there is no data about the consumption, besides the figures that the Prime Minister announces in the Parliamentary Group meeting. Without any public explanation, INSTAT withholds the most vital indicators of the economy, on which are based the policies and the decisions of the government and businesses.
It seems that this is turning into something common. Last year, this institution broke all delaying records when published the GDP for the second trimester, with the strange justification that the Tax Office had refused to give them the data, although this was rejected by the Ministry of Finances.
After three months of delays, the economic growth in the second trimester was published almost secretly, on the New Year’s Eve. The 0.5% growth might explain the delay. The credible statistics are more than important for the economy and INSTAT is the main provider. For this reason, the government uses more money for the Institution of Statistics.
But this institution, which will be soon directly under the command of the President, not only produces controversial figures, but it also violates the law.
