Inmates protest in Peqin prison

The inmates of the High Security Prison in Peqin started a massive
revolt this Thursday, after some new decisions taken by the prison
directors for their special permits.

Sources from the Peqin prison say for “Shqip” newspaper that the inmates started their protest during the recreation hour. When the inmates were to return to their cells, they refused and presented to the director some requests.

After Lulezim Paja escaped from Prison on 19 December 2011, who had received three days of special release for visiting his relatives, the prison directors have taken harsher measures for avoiding such incidents. The same source says that the prison directors have also reduced the number of permits. Currently only 3-4 permits can be given simultaneously, in order to have the inmates under control.

But this decision has created concerns among the inmates, who now will not be able to meet their relatives. The protest alarmed the security structures by obliging the prison directors to take measures for taking the situation under control.

Although the decision was taken 24 before the protest, there has been no official confirmation for the news that there was a protest inside the prison. The relatives of the inmates who have came for routine visits have not been allowed inside.
