Infections, hospitals lack of disinfectants

Hospital infections in our country remain in high levels, due to the
lack of disinfectants. According to surgeon Arben Gjata, hospital
infections for complicated surgeries reach 38% of the cases.

“Since surgery is invasive and aggressive, the danger of wound infection is higher, especially for the blood vessels, urinary and pulmonary infections. The infections on clean operations reach 2%. In more complicated operations, when the wound is already infected prior the operation, it goes to 38%. There is a big problem that should be resolved and that requires constant improvement”, Gjata declared.

The Public Health institution has monitored hospital infections for one year and has noted that besides the fact that there is a lack of disinfectants, the staff doesn’t respect the most basic rules, such as washing the hands.

Specialists at the Public Health Institution consider as sterile only the cardio-surgery pavilion at the University Hospital Center of Tirana.

During a special conference about the hospital infections it was underlined that all of these are related with the budget managing deficiencies and not with the lack of disinfectants in the market.
