Increased number of depressive illnesses

Increased percentage of economic crisis, divorces, unemployment,
domestic problems, loss of a dear person and even blood feuds increase
the number of Albanians who suffer anxiety and depression.

World Health Organization specifies that one in four persons suffers mental illnesses at least once in their lives, but the data in Albania are incorrect due to the fact that most of the patients go to pharmacies without consulting doctors and take anti depressants for a long time, such as “Kxnax” or “Luminal”, which create more problems and addictions.

“With the increased number of external factors, there should be more patients with problems. Many individuals take pills that cause addiction, same as alcohol, and increase dangers. I have contacted with people who suffered depression and addiction”, declared Irena Thoma, a psychiatrist doctor.

Most of the patients do not admit their situation. They cure themselves with the wrong medicine and make their situation worse, or even end up in suicides.

“People often neglect mental health. 60% of the suicides are caused by mental illnesses, while external factors make individuals suffer a greater pain in those moments, which could even lead to suicide, and this goes for the 40% of other suicides”, Thoma declared.

Using medicine for a long time causes addiction and creates complications. Doctors say that families have a bigger role in this time of economic and social difficulties.
