In the Wild North

Passing the Mitrovice Bridge is almost always frightening and stressful for Albanian TV crews. Different to Serbian media, Albanian journalists and cameramen are obliged to find other ways for entering Northern Mitrovica.

This time, our team was obliged to take an illegal Serbian taxi driver to travel to the office of the Secretary of the Serbian Ministry for Kosovo.

In an exclusive interview for Top-Channel, the Secretary of the Serbian Ministry for Kosovo, Oliver Ivanovic, declared that the Kosovo Prime Minister, Hashim Thaci, should not take decisions like that of July 25th.

According to him, if this would be repeated, the reaction of the Serbs would be the same. He also added that the Serbian representatives in the Kosovo government are instruments of the Kosovo Prime Minister.

“Prime Minister Thaci usually gives only information of local interest, but we want to say him that there no will be implemented decision if it would create tensions in north, much less the control of the border checkpoints or the presence of Kosovo Customs agents in this area. I want to warn you that this wouldn’t be a good decision. I suggest all of you to be cautious with ‘heated declarations’. I think that EULEX should enter in action, because the border control issue belongs to EULEX”, Ivanovic declared.

To the question why Serbians do not accept any solution by Prishtina, Ivanovic responded by saying that Prishtina is acting  the same way.

“If they will try to bring Special Forces in north, the citizens will react. The protests will continue even in the future, each time that there will be such initiatives. The protests will stop only after solutions will be found, and only through EU. A solution that serves only to the interest of the Albanians will never be accepted by the Serbians. Such a solution will not be implemented, although that is what the government in Prishtina wants. This will never be achieved. I am sorry for the police agent that was killed, but the responsibility for this goes to those who prepared this weak intervention”, Ivanovic declared.

To the question if the Serbian and Kosovo representatives will ever find an agreement, he answered:

“I think yes, but not through violence”.

Ivanovic declared that he has a dual interest in his activity in Kosovo, for the fact that he was born in Kosovo, has his family here and serves to the Serbian state.

He added that the Serbian representatives in the institutions of Kosovo do not represent the Serbian interests, but only those of the Kosovo Prime Minister.

“They have remained silent for vital issues that are in the interest of Kosovo Serbs. Such people are not respected even by the Albanians. This is my opinion. As everybody else in Balkan, we mostly like those who have dignity and character, rather than those who do what the others tell them”, Ivanovic declared.

As for the criminal groups in North, he confirmed that they exist, but the biggest are in the southern part, especially in the government of Prishtina.

“Speaking about criminal issues in north is a mask that Prishtina uses for undertaking actions in the area. Here, the criminality is not higher than in other areas. The center of the criminality is nowhere bigger in Kosovo than in Prishtina, where is the government and the budget”, Ivanovic declared.

“You must know that the smuggling in the north is related to people who are not of this area. They would never exist if they wouldn’t have their network in the center of Kosovo,” the Serbian official declared.

Besides the comments of Ivanovic, non official Top-Channel sources declared that the parallel structures have decided to change their action strategy.

From the latest actions of EULEX for finding the killer of the police agent Enver Zymberi, Top-Channel has received information that the Serbian groups will not block northern streets, but only those where EULEX and KFOR are seen.
