December 3 marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, but the barriers this category of people face in their daily lives in Albania and the limited economic opportunities, brought together several dozen representatives in front of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tirana today.
“This day finds this community in the most difficult situation. All the groups in need, such as work and war invalids, paraplegics, tetraplegics, autistics, and the blind, live mostly on family donations because the 150 thousand lek (150 euros per month) of state assistance is not even enough for medicine, so I call on the government to turn its attention to us before it is too late,” said Gjovalin Shqalsi, chairman of the society of persons with disabilities.
“All members of this organization/association have contributed to Albanian society, therefore the state should look at this group from time to time. A year-end donation is not enough, it requires continuous and comprehensive care,” he added.
The purpose of this day is to promote the rights, well-being, and raise awareness about the situation of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society.
