“Immunity won’t resolve corruption”

Ditmir Bushati, chairman of the Parliamentary Commission for the European Integration declared that the immunity issue is being misused in function of the political daily needs, hiding this way the real economic and social problems that the citizens face each day.

“Limiting the immunity cannot be compared with the obligations that our country needes to fulfill for corruption and organized crime. For Sali Berisha, limiting immunity is a legal act that is equal to the destruction of corruption. For us, limiting the immunity is the starting point that must be followed with clear anti-corruption measures, as regards the control on state owned companies, the conflict of interest problems, the public procurements and all sectors that suffer corruption, such as the Tax OFfice, the Customs, the Health and Education System”, Bushati declared.

Bushati explained the approach of the Socialist Party regarding the immunity and the majority’s rush to vote the Constitutional amends before August sixth.

“The Socialist Party initiated the law for limiting immunity in Constitutional ways, which can be clearly noted in yesterday’s speeches of the Integration Minsiter. We voted in favor in principle for the amends, and since we are interfering with the Constitution, we proposed a series of new reforms that also demand Constitutional amends, in order to guarantee the independence of the Justice System, the eradication of the impunity culture and war against corruption. The goals are very clear: on one hand, the Albanian government is trying to impose a date for finishing an important voting but that is not addressed to the basic corruption issues, and on the other hand, the Socialist party has not only voted in favor of the immunity limitation, but we are even proposing other Constitutional amends, so that justice cannot keep being an expensive good that you can buy on the market”, Bushati declared.

According to Ditmir Bushati, the Albanian Parliament has all chances to vote the immunity limitations and the Constitutional amends that are related with the Supreme and Constitutional Court appointments.
