Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Council of Legislation at the Commission of laws gathered for the
Constitutional amends and the immunity lifting law. Both agree on the
immunity limitation, but are divided on some procedures for its
realization.
The Socialists explained the alternative draft submitted recently in Parliament, while the majority insisted to pass the law within August sixth.
Fatmir Xhafaj, from the Socialist Party, declared that the impunity culture against corruption is a very serious concern for the citizens and the international partners, and immunity was not the only reason why corruption is not fought. Xhafa believes that the only way to really fight corruption is to bring real equality in front of the law.
Parliament Speaker Jozefina Topalli answered by saying that there is no reason to tell the Albanians that they don’t want to be equal to them, when everyone wants to be equal in front of the law.
Pandeli Majko from the Socialist Party declared that the changes should not stop with the immunity, since a politician cannot be punished by a judge or prosecutor that has been appointed by him. He said that a judge could not have immunity, but he could still be untouchable, and this is what should be discussed next.
The Parliament Speaker answered by saying that this is a matter of good will, and the opposition has the chance to show the people that they want to be equal and that they want to fight corruption. She said that there are MPs who enter in Parliament only for the immunity, so that they can keep making money illegally.
