IMF: “Vetting law will not pass in a tent”

Strong political messages usually come from Brussels and Washington, but
this time it came from the prestigious international institution for
economy, the IMF.

“The board of Directors in Washington underlined that a successful implementation of the judiciary reform is very important for the economy. For this reason we appeal all political actors, including the opposition, to do their job in parliament, because the judiciary reform cannot pass with the people sitting on the street, in a white tent”, declared the permanent representative of the Fund for Albania, Jens Reinke.

Reinke’s declaration seems like a clear reference to the opposition, which has been staying outside the Parliament for the past 10 days. But why did the IMF launch a message for the judiciary reform, a matter outside their competences?

“The rule of law is the biggest obstacle for the economic growth and competition in Albania. Property needs to be secured by the law, the implementation of agreements, and there should be more predictability. All of this needs an effective judiciary, so that the public is secured that corruption will not play a significant role”, Reinke declared.

According to the IMF leader in Albania, the delay of the reforms makes it more difficult for Albania. “Reforms need to be credible, and the new government after these elections must be committed to take them ahead. Not only the justice reform, but also that of public finances, becoming credible for local and foreign invesetors”, Reinke said.
