Ilir Meta leaving government?

01/04/2013 00:00

Several voices in the past four days have been saying that the left
winged Socialist Movement for Integration will abandon the coalition
with the right winged Democratic Party, and will join the opposition’s
main force, the Socialist Party.

No one has officially confirmed this option, but all signs show that this is real and has nothing to do with April Fools day.

Today, on April 1st, Ilir Meta had a meeting with the Prime Minister, Sali Berisha. Reliable sources confirm for Top Channel that Ilir Meta told the PM that SMI has no problem passing the three presidential decrees. But they also talked about the coalition. Top Channel sources refuse to confirm officially if Meta and Berisha discussed this matter, but they insinuate that Meta might leave the coalition. The Prime Minister has declared nothing about this move.

Meta declared that the SMI will decide for its coalition during the National Convention, which is expected to be held by mid April.

Sources say that this convention will announce the detachment of SMI from the government and join the Socialist Party. If this will be confirmed as true, there will be some major questions. Will SMI agree to be part of the government as a minority, or will they join votes with the SP for a confidence motion before June 23rd? This option might be difficult.

The Constitution which was approved with Ilir Meta’s vote against it, while Berisha and Rama voted in favour, makes the Prime Minister stronger and allows him to hold a confidence motion too. And if he fails to receive 71 votes in favour, the Parliament will be dispersed and no one will be able to create a new government. The Constitution obliges the government to stay in duty until the next Parliament will be formed.

Meta: I don’t comment on April 1st

Ilir Meta was careful today in front of the media, and gave no details about the SMI’s position in the government.

Meta avoided political declarations, reminding that today is April 1st. He said that the political decisions will be taken in forums.

Rama starts consultations

A few hours after the news for possible movements at the government’s coalition, the Socialist leader gathered the political council at the Xibraku complex.

Another meeting will be held tomorrow, with probably new developments.

This is not the first time that this council meets, and when asked by Top Channel, Pandeli Majko declared that this is just a normal meeting, without adding anything else.

Other Socialist MPs did not comment about a possible coalition with the SMI.

However, the news for the SMI leaving the coalition is nothing new, since there have been voices about it for at least five days.

SP hesitates to answer, but there might be a coalition with the SMI, which will have many voices against.
