HPPs without environmental permits

The Ministry of Environment has established a working group for verifying the HPPs which have environmental permits.

The Chief Inspector of Environment, Ergys Agasi, declared that only 180 HPPs have environmental permits.

“This group created at the Ministry of Environment has made a verification of all HPPs and hydropower plants that have received permits from the Ministry of Economy. There are around 450 HPPs which have permits from the Ministry of Energy, but they don’t have environmental permits. Only 180 of them received environmental permits, and there will be a verification of the situation”, Agasi declared.

Most of the permits were given in protected areas in Gjirokaster, Permet, Fier, Vlore, Librazhd and Tropoje. If built, these HPPs will cause a huge environmental problem.

“As Environment Inspectorate we will take measures by making propositions for fines which mount up to 2 million ALL and even to suspension of activity for all subjects that have no permits”, Agasi explained.

The Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, declared that after the verification, some of the HPPs will be removed.
