The Council of Territory Regulation, which is led by the Prime Minister,
held a meeting today in which was illegally approved the construction
of two hydropower plants over the Lengarica river by “Lengarica &
Energy Sh.P.K” company, at the Petran commune in Permet, by violating
this way the law “for natural monuments and protected areas” of 2002.

The projects of these two hydropower plants foresee constructions throughout the entire Lengarica canyon, such as dams and tunnels that will pass across this area which has two natural monuments, such as the Benje Banja, and the Lengarica Canyons. But this area is also declared as National Park in the Forest Fund of Albania.

The Petran commune is not aware about the project and has not approved any of it. They are even against the decision, with both votes from the right and left councillors.

“We were pressured by Parliament Member Genc Ruli to pass these projects, but we didn’t, because that would damage the tourism and economy of our area”, he declared.

The Mayor of Permet, Gilbeto Jace, declared that everyone should act to stop the construction of these HPPs that could destroy the future of this area, which is tourism.
