600 Albanian workers from the Banja hydropower plant have went on a
strike this Wednesday, demanding a change with the heavy working
conditions.
With the support of the Union, they demanded payment for additional hours, weekends and official holidays. They demanded the Ministry of Labor to come and see how they work.
“No promise was kept the first time. We were simply lied to and threatened to be fired. We demand the Labor Code to be implemented”, one of them says.
“They have threatened to interrupt the agreements and to use force”, another one adds.
The vice Union leader, Fadil Kamami, appealed the “Limak” sub-contracting company to implement the Albanian Labor Code.
“They are forced to work 12 hours a day. There has been a lot of pressure. The Turkish leaders threaten to fire them for the smallest problem. The minimal payment should be 300 EUR for workers and 500 EUR for drivers”, Kamami declared.
The leader of the project says they have been implemented the Albanian laws and conditions. He said that they will review the requests of the workers.
“We are working with a major project. The workers are on strike for the working conditions. We have worked within the conditions of the Albanian law. As everywhere, our site might have problems, but the working conditions, the sleeping, food and health conditions have a good standard. We haven’t had any incident, but some of the workers might have problems. We are talking with them and we hope to find a solution. The working process has not been damaged, because we have taken measures and we hope to find a solution very soon”, declared Mustafa Ozgar.
This is not the first protest of the workers. Just three months ago they had the same demands and the “Limak” leaders promised to find a solution for everyone, but the situation keeps being problematic.
