Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, admitted for the first time
that the project for building 220 hydropower plants in Albania, for
which the government released concessionary permits, is not going as
predicted.
The cause have been dozens of companies that have not respected their agreements with the government. Although the deadlines have been postponed, they have not started building the hydropower plants. In the weekly government meeting, Berisha warned that the government not only will cancel the agreements with the companies that have failed to respect the deadlines, but they will also see to not allow them anymore in the concessionary race.
“The agreement should be implemented, which means that after the deadline expiration, they will lose their agreements. I know that there have been some penalties and warnings, but it is time to implement the government decision, because there is a great interest in the energy industry. They are blocking cascades that are very good for investments. The violation was made with our consent, when we decided to postpone the deadlines, but it is time to give this opportunity to someone else. It is important to review the financial guarantees for second opportunities, with the hope that they will be constructed soon”, Berisha declared.
In this government meeting Berisha clarified that the public administration will not increase the number of employees without a reason. The decision was consolidated even more after the World Bank published the report for economic freedom, ranking Albania among the 10 first countries in the world for the biggest economic freedom. According to Berisha, keeping the promise of a small administration that creates a light budget burden and the economic model based on economic freedom, are the two main causes that saved Albania from the international financial crisis, which is not expected to end soon.
“The Ministers and agency directors should be clear that they cannot hire no one in their administrations”, Berisha declared.
