Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The opposition leaders met for discussing and organizing the homage for
the four protesters that were killed on January 21st in front of the
Prime Minister’s Office.
One year after, on the same date, the opposition will organize at the “Deshmoret e Kombit” boulevard the memorial ceremony for Ziver Veizi, Faik Myrtaj, Aleks Nika and Hekuran Deda.
Prec Zogaj has invited all Albanians to join the homage, not simply as a commemorating moment, but as an appeal to the justice institutions for finding the authors of this tragedy.
“We invite the citizens of Tirana and Albania to participate in this homage, so that with their presence they can support and encourage justice for this tragedy, the reestablishment of justice, the cleaning of this stain from the history of the Albanian democracy. On this occasion, on behalf of the opposition parties, I greet the declaration of the three ambassadors who called the deaths of four citizens as unforgivable. We are looking forward for justice to say its word”, Zogaj declared.
The itinerary foreseen by the organizers should be the same as on January 28th. The people will march from the Socialist Party headquarters to the place where the four photos of the victims will be displayed.
Same as one year ago, there will be a stand functioning as a borderline for no allowing the crowd to go at the Prime Minister’s Office. After the homage, another activity will be held at the Academy of Arts, while SP representatives will be present at the personal ceremonies of the relatives in the respective areas.
The British Ambassador: Investigations should not delay
On the verge of the anniversary of January 21st, the British ambassador in Tirana, Fiona McIlwham declared for the media:
“Our thoughts go to the families of those who died. The first month of the last year was very sad for Albania and democracy in this country. As other international partners have declared, it is very important to bring justice, especially for the families. One year ago, our Minister for Europe, David Lidington appealed for a full and independent investigation of the events that took place in Tirana. This investigation is still undergoing. It is a credible process that will need time, but it really should not delay. We appeal the Albanian authorities to fully cooperate with the prosecutors for the investigation”, the British ambassador says.
“Justice demands professional and impartial institutions that the public trusts and that act with impartiality, closely followed by the media, in order to ensure that the process is righteous”.
“A few weeks ago, in Britain, two people were sentenced after 19 years, for the racist murder of a student. This proved the essential role of the public and of the media pressure for pushing forward the reforms and for guaranteeing that no one stands above the law.
