The German Ambassador in Tirana, Carola Mueller Holtlemper, during a
visit in Gjirokaster, reiterated the fulfillment of the 12 criteria for
the EU candidate status.

She also commented about the disagreements between the German KFW Bank and the Albanian government. During a meeting with the local representatives, she asked for more attention to be paid to the heritage and tourism issues, especially for the development of the southern region. As regards the EU candidate status, the German ambassador declared that Albania is making all efforts for receiving it.

“Since last November, Albania was committed in fulfilling the 12 EU candidate status criteria, and its fulfillment remains to be seen. I can mention the electoral and parliamentary reforms as very sensitive, or the law implementation for issues that are related with war against corruption and war against organized crime. Other efforts are still needed and I can say that this issue remains open”, Holkemper declared.

As regards the presidential election, the ambassador added: “I can repeat what I have said earlier. Albania has a Constitution and this Constitution sees as preferential an authority that will be chosen by the wide majority. This would be the ideal occasion, based on your Constitution, for the President to represent the national unity.
