Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future It seems that the History of Albania will face another challenge. Often
politicized and avoided, the history, according to the government, needs
to be reviewed.
It will be especially necessary for the history during the communist period, so that the generations can learn about the communist crimes from a new dimension, and also the monarchy period.
Prime Minister Berisha has given a personal contribution in revaluating Ahmet Zogu, whose history has been deformed by the communism.
But from political discrimination to political evaluation, the same mistakes could be made. Hence, the historians say that any reevaluation of the history should be made only by the historians.
As for the reevaluation and enrichment of our history, besides communism and monarchy, a great attention will be paid to the National-Liberation war and the independence period.
According to the historian Valentina Duka, the independence period will take a new direction, while there have been discoveries made for the movements and diplomatic meetings of Ismail Qemali in the European chancelleries.
“There are very interesting meetings of Ismail Qemali, his interesting activities. There are even wrong political steps made by him. Not because he didn’t love Albania, but because at certain moments, it was difficult for him to get the right political orientation in that troubled Europe and Balkan”, declared the historian Valentina Duka.
The director of the History Institution, Beqir Meta, explains that the historical modifications require time and we cannot pretend that it can be over within the 100th year of independence. However, the working teams have been created and the duties are distributed. According to Meta, the Monarchy period will now be seen differently and king Zog will have another place in the changed history, same as the movements of other figures of this period that will be reviewed.
“There will be another dimension for the figure of king Zog in the 1920-1924 periods; for the figure of Bajram Curri, Hasan Prishtina, Elez Isufi, etc. There will be reevaluations by dividing these figures, not only showing the black and white side, as it has been made so far, but with all their assets and contributions, with the mistakes and instabilities of the political processes of that time”, Meta says.
The figure of Ahmet Zogu is very complex, with its positive and negative sides. According to historian Ksenofon Krisafi, we cannot reject the efforts of King Zog for the consolidation of the Albanian state, but we also cannot forget the deals he made with the Yugoslavs for his own power, or the non-patriotic movements that caused the sale of St. Naum.
“On my opinion, Ahmet Zogu should be included among those political Albanian personalities that gave their contribution to the consolidation of the Albanian state. But these cannot fade the aspects that are an essential part of Zog’s personality, such has his position on the St. Naum, the ceding of St. Naum and Vermosh and his political stance towards Italy”, declared the historian Ksenofon Krisafi.
If we see the expression of the famous historian, Bernd Fischer, saying that for understanding the Albanians of the 2000, it is important to understand who they were in the 1939-1945 period. It remains to be seen if this is the most delicate period that will require more work and debate.
“I don’t see the Albanians united even earlier. It’s not only the war period. This is an older history. If you see the Albanian history, even earlier, you will notice that these divisions have existed even earlier, but the war made them even deeper, and the post-war even more, when the war of classes was the essential, the old politics, divide and conquer.
In a point, Enver Hoxha and Ahmet Zogu are united: both of them had the goal to create an independent state. But regardless the harsh Stalinist violence and rhetoric, Hoxha had no other solution then becoming as nationalist as Zog.
Fischer says that it is up to the democratic forces to determine either the nationalism that was built on the foundations laid by Zog, and further inspired by Enver hoxha, will become a positive or negative force in the Balkan region.
