Himara Mayor on expropriation issue: “OMONIA has misinformed Athens”

The Albanian government drafted an urban requalification plan for
Himara, which was opposed by the Omonia Association, representing the
Greek minority. They claim this is a malicious plan that expropriates
only citizens of the Greek minority. The government, on the other hand,
says that the plan is part of their Urban Revival, which they have
followed in many other cities.

Official Athens reacted after this, after being informed by OMONIA. But the Mayor of Himara, Jorgo Goro, said that Greece had received wrong information, which was sent intentionally, and this was reflected by the reaction of the Greek Ambassador in Tirana.

“Athens has been wrongly informed, and this can be understood by the stance held by the Greek Ambassador to Tirana. We are developing the area and buildings that don’t go with the project will be demolished”, he said.

The Himara Mayor says that the project doesn’t affect Greek citizens only. He insists that this is being exploited politically.

“There are 23 expropriations. How many of them are Greek? There are citizens with Greek passports. There are others with German and US passports. There are others with Albanian passports. We must not say that all of them are Greek, for political reasons”, he declared.

The group who oppose the plan requested a meeting with Prime Minister Rama.

“It was a meeting for clarifying the Prime Minister about the project. There is enough space to realize the plan and damage less properties possible. We must register the property first and then we can continue according the plans of the Albanian constitution”, said Fredi Bejleri.
