Road accidents in Albania have not experienced the expected reduction, although this year was projected by the Ministry of Interior as the year of road safety.

Although in pandemic conditions and isolation for more than two months, road accidents have been in high figures in Albania.

According to data from the state agency INSTAT during the 10 months of 2020 153 people lost their lives in road accidents across the country, most of whom were young people.

In October alone, 25 people lost their lives, of whom 23 were men and two women.

During 2020, 108 road accidents were counted out of 118 that occurred in the same period in 2019. The number of injured in the 10-month period of 2020 is 1312 people, out of 1713 people in the same period last year.

The largest number of fatalities from road accidents occurred in large cities, such as Tirana, Durres, Shkodra, Elbasan and Fier, as a result of the high concentration of population and density of vehicles. Albania ranks among the countries with the highest number of fatalities from road accidents in the Region and Europe. A strategy devised four years ago to reduce road casualties has not achieved its objectives.
