Helsinki accuses judges

The disappearance case of businessman Remzi Hoxha is one of the most
typical examples when the process is delayed due to the frequent
absences of lawyers and defendants in the courtroom.

The Chairman of the Albanian Helsinki Committee, Vjollca Mecaj, brought this as an example that shows how the judicial processes are postponed without concrete reasons, even with 15 days periods and without recording any motivation.

“Unmotivated adjournments of trial sessions or for unsubstantiated motives happen not only for important and complicated cases, such as that of Gerdec, but also for simple cases. Recently we have also monitored the state administration, where people have been fired for political reasons or without valid motives”, Mecaj declares.

The Albanian Helsinki Committee presented a full report of the violations of the Albanian citizens’ human rights. In Tirana and many other towns, people held by the police detained longer than the law requires, in very problematic conditions: without water, electric power or even minimal sleeping equipments.
