After raising the alarm that some brands of milk in Albania have
increased levels of Aflatoxin, the Ministry of Agriculture trued to calmed consumers by announcing that the substance, although above the EU norms, is not harmful to humans.

“While waiting for the tests of the Italian lab, which is accredited by the EU, we can guarantee the Albanian consumers that they do not risk anything. The suspected levels are far from the dangerous norms”, stated Gani Moka, Firector of the Food Safety Policies and Consumer Protection.

Moka explained that the Aflatoxin level is the same in all other milk brands produced in Balkan, all over the level that is allowed in the EU.

“The preliminary analyses show that the Aflatoxin level is almost the same as in every other Balkan state, including Kosovo. This substance is present in milk for some seasons”, Moka declared.

When asked by Top Channel about the real level of Aflatoxin in these brands, the Ministry of Agriculture refused to release a statement.

“We have the exact values for the brands that were tested by the Kosovan and Albanian authorities, but we are waiting for EU accredited lab results”, Moka declared.

SP: Government reacts after problematic products are on market

The opposition says that the government must do its job before the products are actually brought onto the market.

“Our doctor Prime Minister must know very well that prevention is the key of success. The government could have tested the products before they actually went on the consumers’ hands. All foods are out of control, causing the consequences that we have to face today, which put the health of every Albanian in danger”, declared Ilir Beqja, secretary of the political program at the SP.

Beqja stated that tests should be held not only to guarantee the health of Albanian people, but also to protect the farmers’ hard work.
