Health Ministry, new mental health law

After 15 years, the Health Ministry amended the mental health law, and
the new draft was discussed at the Parliamentary Commission of Health,
Labor and Social Matters.

When presenting  the amend, the Health Minister mentioned some of the novelties offered by the new draft, starting from the inclusion of new concepts, such as multidisciplinary centers, and the new treatments for mentally ill patients. Another novelty with this draft-law, according to Minister Petrit Vasili, is the service for children, which has been offered for the first time.

The mental health draft-law removes the obligation for sending problematic patients to psychiatric hospitals each time that they were obliged to be checked by the medical commission, for then receiving the disabled people certification.

According to Vasili, this would resolve the corruption problems that were noted in this sector. On their behalf, the Socialist MPs greeted the new draft-law, but they asked the Ministry to give priority to the problems that are faced during the law implementation, such as the number of psychiatric doctors, psychologists and social workers that will be needed for the community services.
