After 60 citizens were poisoned with salmonella in a Tirana restaurant,
Public Health Specialists raise the concern of the food inspection
chain.
“A series of structures are involved with food epidemics, and because each structure has its own competences, the inspection is often faulty”, declared Silva Bino from the Infective Disease Department at the Public Health Institution.
According to the Inspection law, the Public Health Institution inspects documentation related to hygiene, while the food inspection is held by the National Food Authority and the Institution of Veterinary and Food Safety.
“The structures of the Public Health Ministry are excluded from the food inspection chain. The National Food Authority should be persent at least when the product is certified. Then there should be the authority of the Health Ministry, which is the State Health Authority”, said Eltar Deda, Chief Inspector of the State Health Inspectorate.
The persons who were poisoned are now out of danger, while the restaurant is still shut down.
