Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future To one of the 17 Guantanamo Prisoners in Albania has been denied the
right to return in his country, Egypt. Top Channel has learned that
Sherif Almeshad has sent a request to the Albanian government for
returning to his country after the fall of the Moubarak regime.
His request has been supported by the Egyptian authorities, since he faces no more risks.
The letter of the Egyptian Embassy in Tirana says that Sherif Almeshad is not penally persecuted in Egypt. The entire information requested by the Albanian side was brough to the Albanian government’s disposal.
The letter says that the Albanian government has refused to allow him leave Albania, while the Egyptian government is working for his return to Egypt, without knowing the reasons why the Albanian state rejects his return, together with his wife.
Other European countries, including the EU, have allowed the return of people who have been kept as terrorist suspects at the Guantanamo prison.
Sherif Almeshad was arrested in Afghanistan in 2001, and was held as a detainee in Guantanamo for nine years. After an agreement of the US and Albanian governments, he was accepted in our country as an asylum seeker.
