Greenhouse heating systems freeze

The price increase of fuels has seriously damaged the farmers who have
built greenhouses with heating systems, for guaranteeing production even
in winter. The Vaqarr greenhouse is one of the biggest in the country,
almost 1 hectare, and produces tomatoes at any season.

There only two other greenhouses in Albania that use this advanced production technology. But lately, the frost has destroyed a considerable amount of production. The administrators say that they cannot use the heating system, due to the increase price of fuels.

The administrator says that in these cold days, they need at least 2000 liters of gas each day. The price increase of 30% has made the fuel occupy 40% of the production cost. Some years ago, the government gave subventions for the fuels, and the price was not more than 40 ALL per liter.

The tomatoes produced in the greenhouses are sold in the retail markets with 90 ALLKg, while the imported one is 30 ALL more expensive. The local market took two supplies of tomatoes each year, during winter, by causing even the import price to decrease. The damage now goes not only to businesses, but also the consumer.
