Long applauds were heard when the Consul of Albanian in Thessalonica,
Riza Poda, awarded Alexandros Philipidis, a Greek elementary school
teacher, with a gratification certificate from the Albanian Ministry of
education, signed by Minsiter Myqerem Tafaj.

The Greek teacher, together with 24 students from the sixth year, became a symbol of humanism by collecting a large amount of money for helping an Albanian student, Ilia Demiri, to cure bone cancer in a French hospital.

“This is a special award that belongs to all Greek children and to all Greeks. This allows our people to be always united”, Philipidis declared.

The sufferings of Iliar were eased by the solidarity of his classmates, who collected the first money. Then the director asked help from the church and the Municipality, until all Greek students started donating.

The Albanian Consul declared that this activity shows that the relations between Greece and Albania are excellent, and that there are dozens of other cases when the Greek and Albanian families show friendship and cooperation.

In this activity there were representatives from higher local institutions.

“The children showed us the right path, making us understand that there should be no racist messages. There is love and freedom for equal rights. The Balkan people must live in peace and fraternity”, declared Dionisis Psomiadhis, head of Northern Greece District.

The children gave a message in Greek and Albanian for humanity, good neighboring and solidarity.
