With a very strong declaration, far from diplomatic caution, the President of Greece, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, accused Albania of supporting Nazi collaborators by supporting the Cham case, for which, according to him, Albanians must accept the historic truth.
Pavlopoulos threatens that if Albania wants the support of Greece to continue with the European integration path, it must accept the truth about the Cham people, according to him, and the fact that Albania is supporting Nazi collaborators.
The Greek president gave this declaration during a commemorative ceremony in Paramithia. According to Greeks, Cham Albanians in this area joined the Nazi in the operations of the German army, on September 29th 1943.
The declaration of the Greek president, coming in a time when Albania and Greece are about to enter the final phase of a dialogue that is expected to resolve a series of disagreements between both countries, means that there is some chance that these agreements may get postponed.
Despite having agreed on the maritime border agreement, the war law, the recognition of driving licenses, content of school texts, crisis monitoring issues, border cooperation and issues regarding minorities, Top Channel has learned that Greece will not discuss the Cham case, and that it is going to hold it as a condition for continuing the negotiations.
The Cham people were ethnic Muslim Albanians living in Greece, evicted by force from their homes by the Greek authorities after WWII. The Greek government confiscated their real estate properties and the explanation they gave was that Cham Albanians had collaborated with the Nazi.
