The representatives of the Greek Minority protested this Monday in front
of the Greek Consulate in Gjirokaster, against the Greek government
decision to interrupt the pension they had been receiving for two years
from this country.

150 senior citizens from Dropull protested in front of the Greek General Consulate in Gjirokaster, for the interruption of the pension, waiving Greek and black flags in front of the building.

“We feel abandoned. We used the money for the medicine and this means death for us”, one of the residents declared.

“We cannot abandon our place and become a burden to our children in Greece. Greece forgot us, after so many years of suffering. We are Greek and we are entitled to that money. We could agree for a reduction, but they are leaving us to die here”, another protester declared.

“We need 70-80 EUR only to travel to Greece and meet our children. We need 100 EUR each month for the medicine. We have been robbed in Albania, saying that we are Greek and they ask us to pay in hospitals”, another one says.

A group that represents the protesters appointed a meeting with the Greek Consul in Gjirokaster. The Consul supported their requests and sent a request to the Greek government and all Greek political parties in which he explains the situation. The minorities warned for new protests if their requests will not be met. The Greek state offered pensions to 16.000 Greek minority members in Albania and 25.000 in Russia, with a total of 71 million EUR.
