Greek media: Berisha, irredentist

After the Greek Foreign Minister cancelled his visit to Tirana for the
celebrations of the 100th anniversary of independence, because of Prime
Minister’s declarations, the Greek press and the visual media have
reacted.

“Sudden tension in Tirana”, writes the daily “Ta Nea”. The first page of “Kathimerini” has the title “Berisha, irredentist”. The pro-government “Eleftheros Tipos” considers Berisha’s declaration that Great Albania is up to Preveza as an “unbelievable challenge”.

Journal “Democracy” writes that “a great topic for Albania is born”, while “Ellada” had the title “Berisha wants Preveza in Greater Albania”, and comments that the “explosion of nationalism in Balkan creates dangers for all neighbours”.

Greek reactions spurred after the Foreign Ministry published the cancellation of the Foreign Minister trip to Albania.

According to the electronic version of “To Vima”, Sali Berisha declared from Vlore that “Greater Albania starts from Preveza to Podgorica”, mentioning this way the Chameria issue.

This article specifies that Berisha referred to a historic context of 100 years ago and that had no territorial claims to the southern neighbour.

“Proto Thema” comments it as a diplomatic incident, emphasizing that the Albanian Prime Minister rushed to correct the mistake on a press release.

The third party of the government coalition, the Democratic Left Party, said that “Berisha’s incendiary declarations are out of any cooperation logic in Balkan, and they destroy the foundation of the co-existence of the Albanian and Greek people, and also feed extreme nationalism. These declarations are dangerous and condemnable”.

Analysts and politicians in Greece commented that Berisha’s declaration was made for the Parliamentary elections that will start a few months later, and are a mere effort to increase the number of votes for his party.
