One day after Prime Minister Sali Berisha condemned the Greek
interventions in the interior affairs of Albania, Athens reacted through
its traditional method, by closing the border for the Albanian
emigrants.
The border checkpoints in Kapshtica and Kakavija have rejected Albanian citizens who have no permit in Greece with passports that they are allowed in every other state of the Schengen area, part of which is Greece too. The Greek authorities selected the people they let in, by allowing only those with residence permit.
The police asked every other citizen to have a guarantee of 1500 EUR with them. 200 Albanians were returned this Wednesday in the border,
Albanian side established reciprocity
After the decision of the Greek part for not allowing Albanians to cross the Kakavija and Kapshtica borders, the Albanian side of the border decided to use the same method.
The Albanian police established the reciprocity relation with Greece. The Police Border Director, Admir Abrija, made this decision public and ordered the implementation of the procedures. He declared that no Greek citizen should be allowed to pass if their passage was not justified. The Greek side was notified for this decision and several Greek citizens were not allowed to cross the border.
Greek authorities announced the removal of the blockade
After the situation that has been created before 15:00, the Greek Consul in Gjirokastra spoke with the Gjirokaster Police Directory and declared that there will be no obstacle to the Albanian citizens entering Greece, by removing this way the blockade that brought the blocking of the border between two countries.
The Greek authorities have given no argument about why they blocked the border, but they asked the same thing, for the situation to be unblocked even from the Greek side.
The Gjirokaster police declared that they will remove the blockage of the Greek citizens.
