Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The decision of Greece for discontinuing the pensions for 3050 persons
of Greek minority in Albania will bring to the government a profit of 15
million EUR per year. But however, millions of EUR will be missed in
the Albanian market for many minority families that had it as a
considerable living source.
This decision includes such a big number of persons because they haven’t been registered within the new deadline set by the Greek government in the recent months.
The announcement was given by the Greek Parliament and was later published on the pro-government news paper “Ta Nea”. The Minister of Labor explained that Greece pays 360 EUR per month to senior citizens in need, although never insured, if they fulfill the legal conditions of being Greek citizens or of Greek origin, regardless their official nationality.
The Greek Government demanded to register these persons through their new Albanian biometric passport and family certificates. But the Minister declared that only 17.130 homogenous pensioners were registered, and the pension for 3050 of them has been interrupted for not delivering the respective documents in time.
Some weeks ago, more than 100.000 people have not been registered in the biggest Greek Pension Entity, IKA. It is suspected that they are dead and their relatives kept receiving their pensions each month. The entity of Agrarian Pensions, same as other pension funds, is expected to mark a loss of around 1.2 billion EUR.
