Grape growers in the lowland areas of Myzeqe in southwest Albania are taking stock of the season’s work, saying that although production has been satisfactory, the unexplained drop in prices has cut their incomes.
The Allkaj administrative unit is one of the areas with the largest vineyards in the district of Lushnja, but the growers complain that unlike a year ago, their produce was sold at a lower price, and therefore there is putting in their pockets little income.
If last year a kilogram of grapes was sold for 80 ALL($0.8) per kg, this year it did not sell for more than 50 ALL ($0.5) per kilogram.
But apart from the sales, a major problem for these farmers remains the high prices of agricultural products and also their effectiveness.
Faced with these situations, many of these farmers have begun to give up their vineyards by planting the land with olives, a crop that requires less work and has a better profit according to the farmers.
