Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future Specialists say that the Erzen River destruction is creating an irreparable catastrophe.
The Erzen River has been under savage exploitation for many weeks now, by a private construction firm that works for the construction of the new Tirana Ring Road and the Tirana-Elbasan Highway.
Although non-officially, the company has used this riverbed by infringing all rules with the state’s silent approval. At the Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, the Associated Professor, Vangjo Kovaci, says that the inert materials of this river have low sand composition.
“17% of the inert materials of these waters are composed of sand. 71% are average pebbles and 7% are fractions bigger than 40 mm. The inert materials of Erzen are not effective”, Kovaci declared.
The Construction Company is using the gravel of this river that is being used for the project, but the savage exploitation is creating a natural catastrophe in the entire area where this river goes. The inappropriate use has severely damaged the embankments in its entire length.
“By exploiting the inert materials, as in every other river, the environment is highly affected, especially for the flora and fauna”, the professor underlined.
Severe damages are noted in Berzhite and down the Baldushk Bridge, continuing to Romanat. Experts have noted that the riverbed deformation has put out of order the electric pumps that were used for irrigation and drinking water. Also, a great part of the agricultural land has been destroyed and the biggest damage is mostly noted at the Limuth Bridge.
